Jim is currently working as a guide for a company called Wilderness Inquiry. Here is a link to a web page about one of his trips into the South Florida area. They were canoeing in the Everglades and sea kayaking along the Florida keys. One of the participants posted this page. Enjoy pictures by Carlos Valldeperas.

Jim left home (Osceola, Wisconsin) Easter Sunday, 1998 and walked to St. Joseph, Mo. He followed the St. Croix River to the Mississippi River to Southwest Wisconsin. He then cut diagonally across Iowa. When he reached Osceola, Iowa he turned South towards St. Joseph, MO. After a short stay in Conception, MO he arrived in St. Joseph in early July. He worked for a short time at Glen and Mary Harding's Bed and Breakfast. They gave him a financial and emotional boost to continue on. In mid-July he started out again across Kansas and then Nebraska. He traveled (as closely as possible) the Oregon Trail.

Each state is special to Jim. He has written often about the kind people who have helped him along the way. He has marveled at the strength, both physical and emotional, it took the early pioneers to make this trek.
Jim took about 25 walking days going across Wyoming. He expects to arrive at the Pacific Coast by December, 1998

As of October 3, Jim arrived in Afton, Wyoming (on the Idaho border). He received some supplies at the post office, had a glass of beer and a sandwich, and then started off through Idaho. He expects to take about 20-25 days to cross Idaho.

As of October 11, Jim is West of American Falls, Idaho. He expects to be in Boise, Idaho in about 1 1/2 weeks.

As of October 25, Jim had been delayed a bit because of a little parasite problem in something he ate. He was laid up for a few days in Twin Falls, Idaho. He is now back on the road and headed for Boise, Idaho. He spent Sunday (Oct. 25) walking to the Miracle Hot Springs, 25 miles west and north of Twin Falls, Idaho. He's making about 25 miles a day. He will send more pictures from Boise, later this week.

Jim made good time walking between Twin Falls and Boise. On two days, he averaged 30 miles. His feet were a little sore. Because of the cold and rain, he could not stop and care for his feet properly. He arrived at Vic and Julie McGrorty's house Friday, Oct. 30. He cleaned up and rested a little. Andy (Vic & Julie's son) enjoyed visiting with Jim on Halloween.

Jim left the MrGrorty house November 1 and expects to be at the Pacific by the first week in December.

More pictures were sent to us but have not arrived. They are due in later this week.

November 9 - Jim is in the rainy state of Oregon. (Rain and Snow)
His spirits are high but he's looking forward to the end of the trail.

November 11, 1998 - Jim was in Echo, Oregon Sunday. He expects to be in Dalles by the weekend. The weather is cold and damp but his spirits are high. A family from Portland, whom he met earlier on the trail, will come and pick him up for Thanksgiving. He plans on spending a little time with them. After the holiday, he'll return to Dalles and continue his walk.
