Received March 1, 2004 Ted, myself and John Lubinski are compiling info for a potential pamplet or small book about the history of Osceola AFSTA. We want to give several of the items to the Osceola library, offer it for sale to former airmen of Osceola and residents of Osceola. The charge will be for our expenses to include printing and mailings. Sources of data are: Osceola Sun, History Dept with the Air Force at Maxwell AFB, AL former guys who served at Osceola, residents of Osceola and Polk county. A web site that people can funnel info into is: www. osceolawis.com. This is maintained by a retired school teacher and has a sincere interest in our project: John Jenkins of Osceola. Thanks John. Buzz Swuerkstrom, a reporter for the Osceola Sun is a valuable source of info, he has recently written 2 articles about the base. I will soon be visiting the Osceola Sun to brouse through their newspapers from 1950 thru 1975. They have already granted me permission. We want to know who formally owned the property, how many acres, purpose of the base, why it was closed and exactly when, who ownes it now and its purpose. What happened to housing, who are the retired former airmen who now live in the Osceola area, and where are they now section of the pamplet/book. List of Osceola girls who married some of the airmen and where are they now. Info that I have are many photos, names of everyone ever stationed at the base and when, names of former commanders. The base started up on 1950 and ended in 1976. 151 officers and 3630 enlisted served over the 25 years period, there were 16 commanders Officers to include: 3 Warrent officers 91 Lutenants (sp) 39 Capts 9 Majors 9 Lt colonels In Nov of 1959 there were 17 officers and a total of 149 enlisted aboard plus the civilians, which I have a list of who ever worked there as Tecd Reps. Ted, your comments are invited, perhaps you could e mail this to some former airmen that you communicate with. I need a copy of the former logo of the base. John, I would like to c an article in the Osceola Sun outlining our project and solicite for input from the readers and former airmen.
